If you lived on this planet long enough, you know that this world is not perfect. If you’ve interacted with enough people you know that indeed this world is hurting and a lot of hearts are broken, a lot of souls are injured and scarred. Day by day, I am realizing that one of the most important facet of our lives and our walk on earth is our emotions and emotions are a beautiful indicator of what our hearts are feeling, what we believe and the state of our souls
As believers, although our spirits are united with Christ and sealed forever for salvation, we still have lacerations on our souls that hurt so bad. We still have pieces of our hearts that are broken into smithereens and just because we are saved from eternal damnation doesn’t mean we are healed from the injuries we got from the fight of life. For many of us, It is not simple dealing with the fact that a parent who was meant to protect us from the harshness of this life let us down or that a person we gave ourselves to cut so deep that words fail us in describing the pain we feel.
I don’t claim to understand your hurting and scars but I do know that Jesus gets it, I know that is cliche but I hope that after this piece you see a Saviour whose heart beats with love and compassion for you!
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
If you believe in Jesus, He never leaves you nor forsake you. But I don’t believe this verse is affirming that. I believe this verse gives us a peak into who our Saviour is. It is almost like Jesus has a special grace and favour for those who are hurting, crushed or heartbroken. It reminds of how Jesus said : “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to heal the brokenhearted.” Jesus wants you to know that he gets your pain and that he is not far away and because He loves you, he is willing to use His Power to bind up your broken heart and heal your wounded soul. Just like the psalmist says “The Lord restores our soul”.
John 4 : 3 -26
Jesus deliberately went through a place called Samaria to love a women whose heart was broken and soul was wounded. I say her heart was broken because she had had 5 husbands and was living with her boyfriend when Jesus met her. Yet our Lord sought her, to love her to wholeness.
Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again;but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”John 3 : 13 -14
This story tells me that one of the reasons our hearts get broken and our souls become lonely is because we are drinking from the wells of human relationships. We are trying to get our validation, worth and sense of love from a well that simply cannot satisfy us. There is a Jesus shaped vacuum in us that only Jesus can fill. So if your hurt stems from a human relationship I hope you realize that there is a better way; to drink from the wells he has produced inside of you and to get your sense of love and wholeness from Jesus and He alone because only He can truly satisfy.
Just like Jesus sought after the Samaritan woman, Jesus is seeking to love you in the area of your hurt and pain and I believe the cure to a lonely soul, a broken heart or wounded soul is to tell Jesus all about it. For many of us talking about these events is difficult but telling Jesus about the hurt, the pain, the events that caused it, how it makes you feel is a powerful technique that allows His grace to fill your hearts.
Time doesn’t heal the pain of a wounded soul, It merely numbs it. Only Jesus can heal. So, Will you tell Jesus your pain today? Will you let your Saviour into the bitter waters of your soul? When you do that I hope you remember that the one you are talking to understands you like no one else can and best of all, he is all powerful and will make the bitter waters sweet!
This song ranks in the top 5 of beautifully written worship songs about Jesus!
Parting Scripture :
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.Romans : 8 : 38-39
